Gorbachev died age 91 on Tuesday following a long illness, according to Russian state news agencies. He was the final leader of the Soviet Union, serving from 1985 until its collapse in 1991.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and sent a message to Gorbachev's family and friends on Wednesday.
In an official letter published on the Kremlin's website, Putin expressed his "deepest condolences" to Gorbachev's relatives and friends, saying the former Soviet leader "had a huge impact on the course of world history."
Mr Gorbachev took power in 1985 and introduced reforms, as well as opening up the Soviet Union to the world.

But he was unable to prevent the slow collapse of the union, and many Russians blamed him for the years of turmoil that ensued.

Outside Russia, he was widely respected, with the UN chief saying he had "changed the course of history".

In recent years, his health had been in decline and he had been in and out of hospital. In June, international media reported that he had been admitted after suffering from a kidney ailment, though his cause of death has not been announced.

He will be buried in Moscow's Novodevichy cemetery, the resting place of many prominent Russians. It is not clear whether he will receive a state funeral.

President Vladimir Putin sent his "deepest condolences", describing how Mr. Gorbachev had had "a huge impact in the course of history".

"He deeply understood that reforms were necessary, he strove to offer his own solutions to urgent problems," the Russian leader said.

The two men had a strained relationship - their last meeting reportedly in 2006.

Most recently, Mr Gorbachev was said to have been unhappy with Mr Putin's decision to invade Ukraine, even though he had supported the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

President Khalifa United Arab Emirates Death Obituary

Fri. 8:38 a.m.: UAE’s long-ailing leader Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed has died

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates’ long-ailing ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, died today, the government’s state-run news agency announced in a brief statement. He was 73.

Khalifa, the president of the UAE, oversaw much of the country’s blistering economic growth and his name was immortalized on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, after bailing out debt-crippled Dubai during its financial crisis over a decade ago.

He suffered a stroke and underwent emergency a decade later,

Khalifa, meanwhile, helped boost the UAE’s regional profile with relief missions to Pakistan after devastating floods and by sending warplanes to the NATO-led mission against Moammar Gadhafi’s regime in Libya in 2011.

In 1969, while the area was still a British protectorate, Khalifa was named as Abu Dhabi prime minister and chairman of the emirate’s Department of Defense, which later became the core of the UAE’s armed forces. After independence in 1971, he became defense minister along with other roles. Later, the title of supreme commander of the armed forces was assumed by Mohammed bin Zayed.

The UAE also supported efforts in the region to quash the Muslim Brotherhood, including in Egypt.

He was believed to be among the world’s richest rulers with a personal fortune estimated by Forbes magazine in 2008 at $19 billion. He built a palace in the Seychelles, an island-chain nation in the Indian Ocean, and faced complaints there about causing water pollution from the construction site.

In 2007, Khalifa made a major gift to the Johns Hopkins Medicine complex in Baltimore. The size of the donation was not disclosed, but it was described as “transformational.”

In September 2014, the Emirates became one of the most prominent Arab participants in U.S.-led airstrikes against the Islamic State militant group in Syria, deploying its first female air force pilot on the initial raid.

He is known to have had eight children — two sons and six daughters — with his first wife, Sheikha Shamsa bint Suhail Al Mazrouei

Senator Orin Hatch Republican of Utah Dead at 88 years of Age

SALT LAKE CITY -- Orrin G. Hatch, who became the longest-serving Republican senator in history as he represented Utah for more than four decades, died Saturday at age 88.

He launched the Hatch Foundation as he retired in 2019 and was replaced by Mitt Romney. A conservative on most economic and social issues, he nonetheless teamed with Democrats several times during his long career on issues ranging from stem cell research to rights for people with disabilities to expanding children’s health insurance. He also formed friendships across the aisle, particularly with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Hatch,  retired in January 2019 at the end of his last term, served in the Senate for 42 years, making him the longest-serving Republican senator.

He was singer with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Born the son of a carpenter and plaster lather, he overcame the poverty of his youth to become a United States Senator.”

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their six children

Hatch was born in Homestead Park, Pennsylvania, in 1934.

Hatch graduated from Brigham Young University in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in history and from the University of Pittsburgh with a law degree in 1962. He moved to Utah in 1969.

Orrin Hatch Splits With GOP On “Ground Zero Mosque”

Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah) this week became one of the most prominent members of his party to voice his support for the Lower Manhattan mosque.

In a local television interview over the weekend, Hatch said developers have the right to build the proposed Park51 Islamic center, which includes a mosque, two blocks from the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“If the Muslims own that property — that private property and they want to build a Mosque there, they should have the right to do so,” said Hatch, who is a Mormon. “The only question is, are they being insensitive to those who suffered the loss of loved ones? We know there are Muslims killed on 9/11, too, and we know it’s a great religion.”
